I wrote last week a post about a popular Finland-based website for radio hobbyists, DXing.info, mysteriously disappearing in November from the Google search index. That has generated discussions in the DXers community and elsewhere and attracted some attention, including from Google itself, which lead to the site reappearing in the G search results when looking up terms like "DXing". It's still not clear however how that happened. The reliance on Google to find information (and to be found) is growing. That descends of course from Google's excellence in search technology, but the unexplained (a bug? a mistake? an intentional filtering?) disappearance of an information-rich website is not a reassuring indicator (Robert Cringely believes that Google "controls the Internet and we just haven't noticed"). I would be happy to post a statement from Google giving its recount of the DXing.info story and clarifying a bit what happened and how/why.
